NAS and storage

A NAS is storage on your own network. The files sit in your cupboard, not on a server you don’t know the location of.

What for

In a business as shared storage, as the target for backups or as a small file server. At home for photos, documents and backing up the family computers. We set up NAS devices in homes more and more often.

We choose the device, fit the drives, set up shares and access, and connect it to our monitoring. That way we notice when a drive is getting weak, before it fails.

What a NAS is not

A backup. If everything lives only on the NAS, that’s exactly one copy. One fault, one lightning strike, one ransomware attack, and it’s gone. That’s why a NAS always needs a second backup in another place.

What we work with

Three families, depending on what’s already there and what the device has to carry.

UniFi

UNAS 2 · UNAS Pro

For offices that already run a UniFi network. Network, firewall, cameras and storage on one platform, managed in one place.

  • UNAS 2: compact, two drives, RAID 0 or 1, for home offices and small offices
  • UNAS Pro: rack-mounted, several drives, as file server and backup target

UGREEN NASync

DH2300 · DH4300 Plus · DXP4800 Plus · DXP8800 Plus

A lot of performance for the money. For data, media, backups and small services on the side.

  • DH2300: two drives, for home and the small office
  • DH4300 Plus: four drives up to 120 TB, with Docker
  • DXP4800 Plus: business processor, SSD cache, virtual machines
  • DXP8800 Plus: eight drives, 10-gigabit networking

TrueNAS

SCALE · Backup Appliance

For data where an outage really hurts. With the ZFS file system, which detects errors and takes snapshots.

  • Snapshots and replication to a second site
  • Immutable backups that ransomware can’t delete
  • Docker and virtual machines

Monitoring a NAS costs €10 net per month, the same as a server. To the cost calculator
